President Obama Announces New Initiative: Employers of National Service

An effort that recognizes that AmeriCorps and Peace Corps alumni

bring great skills and experience to the workplace

Atlanta, GA – As part of the 20th anniversary of AmeriCorps commemoration at the White House, President Obama announced Employers of National Service, a new cross-sector partnership that encourages employers to create recruitment, hiring, and advancement opportunities for alumni of AmeriCorps and Peace Corps. AmeriCorps Alums has worked with the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that administers AmeriCorps, and its partners, the Peace Corps and the Franklin Project of the Aspen Institute to launch this initiative.

The first group of Employers of National Service includes leading employers from private, public, and nonprofit sectors. Together, these companies and organizations will work to create recruitment, hiring, and advancement opportunities for individuals who served in AmeriCorps or the Peace Corps. AmeriCorps Alums Co-Executive Director Mary Bruce says, “Public, private, and nonprofit recruiters tell us time and again that AmeriCorps alumni are just what they’re looking for: proven, dedicated, results-oriented leaders … the best of America. Employers of National Service is a critical step to connect those who have served our country through national service to organizations seeking top talent.”

AmeriCorps Alums has been working towards this initiative for over two years. AmeriCorps Alums Co-Executive Director Ben Duda says, “We have consistently maintained that AmeriCorps service on a resume matters. And we are thrilled to be part of a new movement to connect our nation’s top talent to jobs in the nonprofit, private, and public sectors.”

More than 900,000 individuals have participated in AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps members serve communities across the country through organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, City Year, Teach for America, and the American Red Cross. More than 215,000 individuals have served in Peace Corps, making a lasting impact on these individuals and the communities in which they served. Peace Corps volunteers serve in 65 countries around the world. Participants in both programs have worked as educators, emergency responders, economic development advisors, disaster preparation and recovery leaders, and counselors. Most importantly, AmeriCorps alumni continue to serve beyond their year of service.

As part of AmeriCorps Alums’ mission to support a lifetime of service, the organization is working with CNCS and its partners to actively recruit new employers from all sectors to sign on as Employers of National Service. This partnership recognizes that AmeriCorps and Peace Corps alumni are motivated, flexible, and outcome-oriented leaders who have developed with valuable skills and training. Employers of National Service will help organizations take steps to recruit national service alumni. These steps include indicating interest in hiring national service alumni in relevant job postings and placing a checkbox on job applications that asks about past national service experience. Organizations that have already signed on as charter members of Employers of National Service include:

  • Corporations: Comcast, CSX, Disney, Sonoma Raceway, Trojan Battery Company, Civic Enterprises, McChrystal Group
  • Nonprofits: American Red Cross, City Year, Habitat for Humanity International, United Way Worldwide, AmeriCorps Alums, Be the Change Inc., National Conference on Citizenship, Points of Light, ServiceNation, Voices for National Service
  • Local government entities: the City of Nashville, Cities of Service
  • Federal Government agencies: CNCS, Peace Corps, National Science Foundation, Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Office of Personnel Management, and the National Park Service
