ServeNext Organizers Raising Awareness Around National Service

December 21, 2010

Post by: Patti Kurtz- NCCC Alum, class of 2007

I am excited to tell you about an amazing opportunity with ServeNext.org.  They are currently accepting applications for their 2011 Class of ServeNext Organizers.  As a member of the inaugural 2010 Class, I can say first hand that it is a great experience for anyone who is passionate about national and community service.

Patti Kurtz, AmeriCorps*NCCC Alum (Team Gold III)

When I applied to AmeriCorps*NCCC in 2007, the program I was accepted to was on the budgetary chopping block, leaving my fellow corps members and I eagerly waiting to find out if our program was actually going to happen that year.  While we were accepted to the program a few months out, it wasn’t until a month before the service year started that we received confirmation that our program would still exist that year.  There’s no reason why these programs should ever have to be at risk for not existing in our communities.  As you all know, a term of service with AmeriCorps is a very impactful experience, for both those you serve and your own personal and professional development.

Since my time in AmeriCorps with *NCCC, I have wanted to promote national service and make sure that these opportunities exist for others who want to serve as well.  ServeNext has helped me to do just that!  ServeNext has given me the tools, training, and support to make this happen and my local Chicago Network has already done some amazing work engaging members of Congress and other key leaders to educate them about the true impact and value of national service programs like AmeriCorps.

With some members of Congress are already putting service programs like AmeriCorps back on the budgetary chopping block, mobilizing at the grassroots level is important more now than ever.  Our representatives need to understand that hard economic times is exactly when our communities need to utilize cost effective solutions like AmeriCorps to address the many different challenges we currently face.

I strongly encourage anyone who is interested in joining ServeNext on the front lines of the national service movement to apply to become a 2011 ServeNext Organizer today.  The positions are designed to fit the schedules of working professionals, so I’ve been able to incorporate the ServeNext workload into my everyday life.

If you know any outstanding leaders who might be interested, nominate them here. If they apply, ServeNext will send you a free t-shirt.  If they are selected, ServeNext will send you a $50 Amazon Gift Card.

Thank you for your continued support!
