AmeriSaur- What if Buffy Joined AmeriCorps?

April 7, 2010

Buffy- iconic cheerleader turned vampire slayer immortalized on the criminally underrated TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer; pre-Bella and better.

Last week while watching television on my quarter-life-crisis-couch, I came to the conclusion that Buffy, of vampire slayer fame, would make the best AmeriCorps member ever. Buffy has great skills: she’s able to work collaboratively as part of a team but is comfortable in a leadership position, she is a natural problem solver, she is able to juggle multiple tasks and prioritize responsibilities, and in the last season of the show she flexed her entrepreneurial skills when she ran that slayer half-way house. On her resume she could honestly write, “saved the world”, I’d hire her in a heartbeat.

Over-analyzing alternative career options for television characters has been a fun way to avoid having to think about my own future career choices. By evaluating Buffy’s transferable skills I don’t have to think of my own. But just as Buffy had a plan for saving the world I need a plan for navigating a career change and after talking it over with several of my friends (shout out to Jen and Jessica) I think I have the beginnings of one:

  • Find out what I’m passionate about, what motivates me to get out of bed in the morning
  • Find out what I’m good at and how I got good at it
  • Figure out where my passion and skills overlap

Once we have mastered this first part we can then move on to part two (because I’m making this up as I go along I have no idea what part two is yet but rest assured I will have at least thought about it before we get there). So for the four or five people reading this I am giving issuing homework: your mission should you choose to accept it is to start figuring out all the things that you are passionate about. Feel free to post your motivations and passions in the comment section below and check back next week to see what I came up with. In the meantime let’s watch Buffy save the world…again.

I remember my quarter-life-crisis-couch well. So comfie… and yet, not. 🙂

Following your passion is the way to go for sure.

Buffy was definitely criminally underrated; I doubt that I will ever find a TV show I enjoy more! Good luck figuring out what you want to do. My year of service ends in November, and I’m already nervous about it!

    Step one: steal underpants
    Step three: profit

Hey does anybody know what step 2 is?

No, but step 3 is profit!

    Underpants gnomes are very wise.

I’m passionate about helping people and trying to make the world at least a better place because I’ve been in it. It took me a while to figure out how to turn that in to a viable career, but with a lot of risk taking and scary moments here I sit in Starbucks pretty darn content with life.
