AmeriCorps alum featured for Volunteer Week

April 6, 2010

AmeriCorps Alum Awista Ayub is featured this week on the official National Volunteer Week site here:

Awista created Afghan Youth Sports Exchange (AYSE), a program that uses sports as a tool to promote leadership abilities of young Afghans in schools. The mission of the Afghan Youth Sports Exchange is to use sports to equip and prepare Afghanistan’s youth with leadership skills. Sports are rapidly becoming the gateway to peace and equality in Afghanistan, especially for young girls and women.

“I have seen the role soccer plays in the lives female soccer players in Afghanistan, as I watched them grow from girls into confident young women and strong leaders,” Awista said.

AYSE prepares youth, the future leaders of the country, to ensure that they have the confidence and skills necessary to lead Afghanistan to a prosperous future. AYSE and a book Awista wrote, However Tall the Mountain, have been featured on CNN, ABC News and in Glamour and the Washingtonian Magazine.

The impact that AYSE is having is a direct result of Awista’s AmeriCorps year and her commitment to the service movement as an active AmeriCorps Alum.
