Why We Serve

March 4, 2009

If you’re an AmeriCorps Alum you’ve undoubtedly been asked the question, “Why?” (As in, why did you decide to dedicate months and maybe even years of your life to service?)  It’s a question we have different, but similar answers to.  Throughout the economic downturn and what’s now being called a recession, more and more people will be called to service.  Each and every one will have reasons that make sense to them and those reasons will inevitably contribute to our collective stories of service.

Here’s just one of those stories… please feel free to share yours with us below!  And don’t forget, if you’ve taken the new-orleans-2007-008pledge, you’ve made a commitment to yourself and to your country.  That’s something to be very proud of and we THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!

The AmeriCorps Pledge

I will get things done for America – to make our people safer, smarter, and healthier.

I will bring Americans together to strengthen our communities.

Faced with apathy, I will take action.

Faced with conflict, I will seek common ground.

Faced with adversity, I will persevere.

I will carry this commitment with me this year and beyond.

I am an AmeriCorps member, and I will get things done.
