Stimulus signed, includes money for AmeriCorps and service

February 18, 2009

It’s been signed… the $787 billion bill that’s aimed at jumpstarting our economy, getting people jobs and as President Obama put it, “…paving the way to long-term growth and prosperity.”

And according to a source on the hill, the final totals include $89 million for AmeriCorps, $65 million for AmeriCorps Vista and $50 million for Nat’l Service Trust and a broader commitment to National Service as a way to renew America.  Those of us working in the sector are both excited and nervous.  We know that service works, that in the long run having more folks doing national service IS going to stimulate the economy, but there are also people out there who disagree.  Now is our chance to show them what we do!

I am currently serving a year of service with AmeriCorps VISTA and will be speaking to the students at both of my colleges on serving. I am finding a positive response from the schools on having me come and speak. I encourage all AmeriCorps memeber to do the same.
