Obama’s Service Plans to Benefit AmeriCorps

January 16, 2009

President-Elect Barack Obama made a campaign promise to increase the size of AmeriCorps from 75,000 to 250,00.  This is great news as many non-profit organizations have been forced to cut back and the extra federal funding would might also benefit as a form of economic stimulus.

AmeriCorps and other non-profit organizations are responsible for a good portion of the on-the-ground-relief efforts in local communities and that additional government support could be used to shore up areas that are weakened by the struggling economy.

The questions that now loom on the horizon are:

  • How soon will non-profit organizations receive aide?
  • Will the expansion/support of AmeriCorps continue past the current economic stimulus?
  • Is National Service a part of the government’s long-term goal?

    Hi:
One way of helping the economy
would be to extend VISTA beyond 3 years
to VISTAs who have given exemplary
    service.
