McKayla’s Not Impressed With AmeriCorps Alums Day at the White House
In case you didn’t hear the BIG news – On Friday, August 17th, 2012, AmeriCorps Alums, in collaboration with the White House Office of Public Engagement and the Corporation for National and Community Service, will be hosting a special convening of AmeriCorps alumni known as AmeriCorps Alums Day at the White House. You can view the official Press Release here.
As special as this event is, there’s one person who didn’t seem impressed – McKayla Maroney. She’s not impressed that AmeriCorps Alums Day at the White House will feature a full-day program highlighting how AmeriCorps alumni have leveraged their national service experience to become influential leaders in their life after AmeriCorps.
For this momentous event, 150 AmeriCorps Alums, many of which are part of our dedicated chapter leadership, have been invited to engage with Senior White House officials and agency representatives. McKayla’s not impressed with the 12 AmeriCorps Alums being honored by the White House as “Champions of Change”, including her fellow Team USA athlete and TFA Alum, Tim Morehouse. These extraordinary leaders will share how their service helped them become successful in areas such as entrepreneurship, corporate citizenship, and civic and community leadership.
Well, we’re hoping that McKayla will be impressed by the ways she can join us online during AmeriCorps Alums Day at the White House:
- Starting at 9:30am ET, join us for the live stream Community Briefing at: WhiteHouse.gov/live
- At 12 pm ET, view the Google+ Hangout at 12:00 pm ET featuring Wendy Spencer, CNCS CEO, and Macon Phillips, White House Director of Digital Strategy. Submit questions here!
- At 1PM ET, join us again at WhiteHouse.gov/live for the Champions of Change panel.
On social media, McKayla will be impressed by how we’ll be engaging with our online Alums:
- Join in the conversation all day on Twitter with hashtag #WHAmeriCorps.
- Share your AmeriCorps Alums stories with your fellow Alums and AmeriCorps on Facebook.
- Register with AmeriCorps Alums if you haven’t already!

I thought that the Alums gathering at the White House was inspirational and reenergizing. It was fantastic to have the opportunity to hear everyone’s story.
