Help eliminate taxation of the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award

March 31, 2010

The fight to end the taxation of The AmeriCorps Education Award is still going!  But, this struggle needs input from Alums like you.  With your input organizations like AmeriCorps Alums can communicate to Congress why AmeriCorps Alumni deserve to get the most from the Ed Award. We all know this taxation sends the wrong message to would be volunteers. But, more importantly, we also know it also hinders the ability of AmeriCorps graduates from reaching their full potential as community leaders.

Currently, members of the Points of Light Institute are working with the staff of Sander Levin; he is the current chair of the House Ways and Means Committee. As such, Levin has a great ability to help push Representative John Lewis’s bill, HR 1596, through the legislative process. If you didn’t know, HR 1596 would allow the grants provided to AmeriCorps graduates to be tax-free.

With input gathered from AmeriCorps Alums here government affairs coordinators at The Points of Light Institute can sit down with Levin’s staff and get them on board to pass this bill through the House.
